What Would Gwyneth Do?

Hey Reader,

As business owners and CEOs, the weight of responsibility can be intense.

You have a team that relies on you.

Clients depend on you.

You have a family to provide for.

And knowing all this, it’s almost inevitable that your thoughts keep circling around the same fears-

  • What if you fail?
  • What if you make a mistake?
  • What if you lose a client or a key team member?
  • What if (insert ANY possible scenario here)?!

So, what do we do?

We work long hours, striving for perfection even though we know perfection is impossible.

We put on a brave face for our clients and our team and pretend like we’re not feeling the crushing weight of a thousand large and small decisions.

But what if we could all take a page from Gwyneth Paltrow’s book?

What if we embraced the idea of imperfect leadership?

Now, before I lose some of you, yes, I am aware that she is a divisive figure.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s fashion, beauty, and wellness brand Goop, is known for selling overpriced products and questionable lifestyle advice.

However, before you write her off, don’t forget that she started Goop writing her first lifestyle and wellness newsletter at the kitchen table in her home.

Over 15 years later, Goop is reportedly worth over $250 million.

Love her or hate her, that’s no small achievement.

And even more impressive? She has built her success while embracing the idea of flawed leadership.

She knows she’s not perfect.

She’s well aware of her critics.

She stands by her decisions but owns up to making mistakes- lots of them.

“Learning the lessons of how to be a leader took me a long time because I was learning on the job, especially on the people front. . . “
- Gwyneth Paltrow

What I love about this mentality is two things.

1—If you can embrace the idea of imperfection, you can let go of some of those what-ifs.
And-
2— It’s authentic!!

And trust me, authenticity is huge. After all, 86 percent of consumers report that authenticity is a key factor in their purchasing decisions.

So, take a moment this week and evaluate your own leadership. If the situation ever arises, ask yourself:

What would Gwyneth do?
Remember, it’s ok to be vulnerable!
Imperfect is perfectly fine.
